Boat Trip to Den Helder Naval Base with Seal Spotting Along the Way

Step aboard the Anna and sail past the sandbanks where seals lie resting, on your way to the naval base of Den Helder. Skipper Frido, born and raised on Texel, takes you across the Marsdiep to one of the busiest naval harbours in the Netherlands. Along the way he shares stories about all the activity on the water, the ships in the naval port, and life on Texel.

Royal Netherlands Navy ships up close

The boat departs from the harbour of Oudeschild on Texel, and the trip lasts about an hour and a half. Along the way you’ll pass the Razende Bol sandbank and sail across the Marsdiep, the busiest waterway in the Netherlands. The Anna has a sheltered indoor cabin, so the trip is comfortable even when the weather isn’t at its best.

Our skipper points out the ships you see and tells the story of the naval base. Den Helder has been the heart of the Royal Netherlands Navy for more than two hundred years.

Departing from Oudeschild on Texel

The Den Helder naval base is normally closed to the public. From the deck of the Anna you sail right past it and see Royal Netherlands Navy ships up close: frigates, patrol boats, offshore support vessels and if you’re lucky, submarines. Frido knows exactly what’s moored where, and explains what you’re looking at.
